How to Print Passport Photos at Home on 4x6 Paper (Save $15+)

How to Print Passport Photos at Home on 4x6 Paper (Save $15+)

A single passport photo set costs $15-17 at CVS, Walgreens, or the post office. You can print the same thing at home or at a photo kiosk for $0.15-0.35. Here's exactly how.

What You Need

  • A smartphone camera (8MP or higher)
  • A white wall or white sheet
  • A standard photo printer or access to a photo kiosk (CVS, Walmart, Costco)
  • 4x6 inch glossy photo paper (if printing at home)

Step 1: Take the Photo

  1. Stand 4-6 feet from a white wall
  2. Face a window for even natural light
  3. Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open
  4. No glasses (most countries ban them now)
  5. Take several shots — you only need one good one

Step 2: Size and Crop

Upload your photo to the Passport Photo Maker and select your country:

  • US Passport: 2x2 inches (51x51mm)
  • UK Passport: 35x45mm
  • Canadian Passport: 50x70mm
  • Indian Passport: 2x2 inches (51x51mm)
  • Schengen Visa: 35x45mm

The tool automatically crops to the correct dimensions with proper head positioning.

Step 3: Arrange on 4x6 Paper

A standard 4x6 inch print can hold multiple passport photos:

Photo SizePhotos per 4x6
2x2 inch (US/India)4 photos (2x2 grid)
35x45mm (UK/EU)6 photos (2x3 grid)
50x70mm (Canada)2 photos

Use the Image Merger to arrange multiple copies of your passport photo into a grid that fits on 4x6 paper.

How to Create the Grid

  1. Download your correctly sized passport photo
  2. Open the Image Merger
  3. Upload the same photo 4 times (for US 2x2)
  4. Set direction to "Horizontal" for the first pair
  5. Merge the two pairs vertically
  6. Set spacing to 2-3px for cutting guides

Step 4: Print

At Home

  • Use glossy or matte photo paper (glossy preferred)
  • Print at maximum quality (300+ DPI)
  • Select "4x6" paper size — do not scale to fit

At a Photo Kiosk

  • Transfer the merged 4x6 image to your phone or USB drive
  • Select "4x6 print" at the kiosk
  • Do not apply any cropping or effects
  • Cost: $0.15-0.35 per print

Online Print Services

  • Upload to Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Costco Photo
  • Select 4x6 glossy prints
  • Cost: $0.09-0.15 per print + shipping

Step 5: Cut

Use a paper cutter or sharp scissors. Cut along the edges of each photo. For US 2x2 photos, each should measure exactly 2x2 inches.

Cost Comparison

MethodCostTime
CVS/Walgreens$16.991 hour (travel + wait)
Post Office$15.0030-60 min
Home printer$0.30 (paper + ink)10 min
Walmart kiosk$0.3515 min
Online print service$0.15 + shipping3-5 days

Savings: $15+ per set.

Tips for Acceptance

  • Print on photo paper, not regular paper — matte or glossy
  • Ensure colors are accurate — no yellow tint from old ink
  • Photo must be recent (within 6 months)
  • If your source photo is low resolution, upscale it first before printing
  • Cut precisely — uneven edges can cause rejection

Conclusion

Between the Passport Photo Maker for sizing and the Image Merger for arranging, you can produce compliant passport photos at home for under $0.50 total — and retake as many times as needed until the photo is perfect.
